Five Cheap Ways to Live a Healthier Lifestyle

A healthier lifestyle is often associated with increased cost. Don’t worry though, here are a few lifestyle changes which won’t break the bank.

It’s fair to say that we’d all live a healthier lifestyle if we had the chance. Unfortunately. many of us are unable to change our habits because of the cost. As one report – published through the NHS – states:

“Since 2002, more healthy foods and beverages have been consistently more expensive than less healthy ones, with a growing gap between them.”

The cost of being healthy can be expensive. From gym memberships to organic food, the price can dissuade many from making long-lasting commitments. The good news is that there are some ways to cut the cost while still taking positive steps. Here are five of our favourites:

01. Go bulk shopping

If there’s a product you particularly like, and purchase regularly, you may be able to make a saving by buying in bulk. From meat to household essentials, just about everything can be bought in large orders at a cheaper cost. Now for the healthy aspect, you can use the bulk orders to begin batch cooking and essentially plan your meals for the month. Not only can you make some great healthy dishes, but always having food in the house can dissuade you from buying unhealthy expensive takeaways.

02. Shop around before buying organic

You may be surprised to see us dissuading you from buying organic food. However, in some cases, products may be marked organic when they don’t actually have much nutritional benefit at all. In this situation, you’re just paying a needless premium. Organic food can be expensive but you may be able to get products which are just as good from your local market. Alternatively, some supermarket own-brands can be very nutritious and – even better – won’t cost the world.

03. Can’t buy fresh? Buy frozen

When it comes to eating healthy, having more fresh fruit and veg seems like a no-brainer. However, there are a couple of problems with buying these products. First, they have a limited shelf life. Second, they can be expensive. You can deal with both of those problems by buying frozen. In many cases, they can be just as nutritious as fresh variants and usually cost substantially less. From strawberries to bags of mixed vegetables, you can make your freezer much greener in barely any time at all.

04. Work out at home

A membership for a good gym can cost around £50 per month. That’s a fair bit of cash and – worse – it’s common for purchasers to go months without setting foot in the gym. Fortunately, you can save your time and money by working out at home. It’s not as tricky as it sounds. From free YouTube videos to downloadable apps, there are lots of ways you can get your home workout started.

05. Head out into nature

Although you can incorporate the outside into your workout, there’s a lot to be said for getting out and experiencing nature. Just ignoring the physical benefits for a second, getting outside and enjoying a walk in the sun for a couple of hours can do wonders for your mental health. Let’s not forget, your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical. Furthermore, there’s never a charge for just exploring nature.
